Even when I really believed, going out on Christmas and Thanksgiving just seemed ultra disrespectful- SFPW
Exactly! I likened it to someone coming to the Memorial and trying to proselytise. How would JWs have reacted?
i can't believe hubby and sis in law actually went out in service today.
when he left this morrning i reminded him to inform those who didn't slam their doors on them that if they join your cult that this will be the last christmas, holiday and birthday they will be allowed to celebrate.
i thought it very inapproiate going out today to knock on doors trying to get converts..

re: adjustments to draw close to jehovah.
dear brothers:.
some changes involving our understanding of the meaning of gods name and what it re p- resents have been made to the first chapter of draw close to jehovah.
The thing that really jumped out at me about this is the marginalisation of most countries in the world. This internet-only release for jws privileges those jws in developed countries only, ones with internet. I wonder how jws in poor countries of south America, Africa and Asia feel at being left out like this. If I were them, I'd feel that the wt was promoting elitism. For years the wt had electronic resources available but always made hard copies to be fair to ones with no computer access. Now, only jws with a certain standard of living are able to access the new stuff. How would you feel if you were told, "sorry, you're poor so you don't get the new stuff yet." Talk about discrimination! It's blatant discrimination against all those faithful drudges living in bamboo or adobe huts in rural Asia, India, Africa and the central- South Americas.

Yes, the choice should be the individual's and no one should force their anti education view onto anyone else.

I went to uni as a jw and I was definitely swimming against the tide. Many made excuses for me saying I only "had to go because [my] parents weren't in the truth and they make [me] go." I was the only one of two in my congregation of 180 who went to uni.

Heck yeah Randy. When I was at uni then later a teacher as a jw heaps of them were intimidated by me. Comments like, " you university people only use big words to make us feel stupid," when of course we are more articulate because we have educatio and not because we want to deliberately make jws feel dumb. I got counseled on the school for using a big word and I hit the roof. On meeting me and knowing I was a teacher many jws would say first, " oh I hated school, hated [my curriculum area]." Fair go, when I meet someone and find out what they do, the first thing I do isn't to run down their job ie "oh I hate buildings, especially ones with Windows you have to wash, I hate mops and buckets, always hated cleaning the bathroom or I hate shopping there, the staff are awful..." But as an educator with education you are fair game for jw disparagement...and I know it comes from insecurity because the odd jw with education or who at least valued it even if he or she wasn't allowed to have it never carried on like that.
you all should be ashamed of your egotistical selves.
how can you leave god's organization to celebrate the work of satan the devil?
it just goes to show you how jehovah's christian witnesses are correct about how persons will leave the truth for their own selfish desires.. first off, christmas is a pagan holiday and it proves no spirit with the almighty jehovah and his son, the christ.
Omg, this was me once. I'm so ashamed at what a thoughtless, judgemental nitwit I was.
when i say poverty, i mean not knowing where your next meal is coming from or being unable to pay your bills or afford necessary medicines poverty.
i'm talking the kinds of poor people who have to get food from charities kind of poor, or long term unemployment living in a trailer/caravan kind of poor.

Yes, the no education doctrine doesn't work in Asia, Africa or any other place where if you don't work, you don't eat. And it also only works in a strong economy where jobs are plentiful. Since the gfc, there are no more economies like that. The unskilled workers are always the first to go, and employers have such a wide choice of workers they will choose someone with full time experience, a degree or certificate, and who is able to work all the time, not needing Thursday nites off, Sundays, dcs, all that.

So true. I was in Myanmar for the 2009 international convention and there were Burmese jws coming to Yangon from all over the country. I heard that many spent years saving and even sold their chickens n that to pay for the trip. So many of them came with no food or a place to even stay or money for the return train trip up country. I observed many wear their same good meeting clothes for the whole three days. The WT passed the hat around to we westerners to pay to feed the Burmese jws n pay for them to travel home. A few dollars to us could feed whole families the whole convention. Now those jws were truly poor, but a lot of the Burmese are like that.
Whole extended families will pool their resources to send one son to Yangon or Thailand to get education and employment other than subsistence farming and to be able to support the rest of the family. They make it possible for whole families to get out of the poverty circle. I remember loesch making a talk at that convention, saying jws shouldn't send a member of the family away to study in Yangon or work abroad, that they should stay home. This in a country where people work 6 days a week and in the country live on 50 cents a day. The jws are kept in desperate poverty there, and the Burmese I met were so humble and shy. The folks from the country acted like we westerners were royalty almost, that's how downtrodden the jws are there.

I mention that because the very first jws I associated with were 'housos', that is, people who live in subsidised govt housing. There were two families in that housing commission. Now being a houso is usually synonymous with being a messy, sloppy, trashy bogan/chav/scouser type with bombed up cars and beer cans in the yard and filth and nicotine stains and dog pee smells inside. The jws were so not like the rest of the housos I was very impressed with them, coming as I did from the solid middle class.

Ignorance is Strength- for cult leaders. A lot of people feel threatened by people more educated than them. They feel inadequate so they belittle education. I copped a lot of it as a teacher and jw: gasp! Uni educated, and an educator herself!
Even simple things like reading is frowned upon. It amazed when I talked about something about history, geography, culture, news, science, literature, languages and jw would say, "wow, how do you know that!?" And I'd have to say, "um, I read. You'd know it too if you read..." But the cult gives them so much stuff to do and crap to read, that even the ones who like to read and learn say, " I'd love to read more but I don't have the time..."
